Just acquired a 55gallon Stand!

I recently acquired a 55 gallon tank with stand from someone on Craigslist. He even delivered it all the way too my house. The tank and the covers were a little bit messy with some hard water build up, but I cleaned em up pretty good using vinegar and Baking Soda. Heres a picture of the tank before he brought it over to me.

The tank has cycled now for a few weeks. I will be posting updated pictures with all new decorations and fish as soon as I find my camera cable.

What Kind Of Fish Tank Do You Get For Your Home Aquarium?

You walk into a large retail store such as Walmart, Petco or PetSmart looking for that perfect fish tank so you can start your home aquarium, yet you have no idea what you are really looking for. Luckily I will help you make that decision. One thing I do have to say is, if you are looking to set up a fish tank just to have a nice decoration, then hit that back button on your browser and forget about starting this hobby. If you decided you are serious about your fish and their lives, then continue reading. Remember, it is essential that you create a great environment for you fish in order to keep them happy and healthy.

Consider where you are going to place your fish tank. A good place would be somewhere that will not have a huge temperature change. Try not putting your fish tank too close to a window that receives direct sunlight, it can heat up your water in a heartbeat and harm your fish. If you will be placing your fish tank on a shelf of some sort, then you better make sure that shelf is strong enough to support your fish tank. Simply filling a 10gallon tank with water will turn into a 100lb tank. A 100lb glass tank crashing down on your floor is not going to be a very pleasant event. Make sure you place your fish tank somewhere with easy maintenance access. If you place it somewhere hard to reach, then most likely you will not be doing much maintaining and you will end up neglecting your fish.

Before buying your fish tank you should always consider the fact that fish do grow just like humans. Don't go buy a 1gallon tank if you expect to keep your fish for a long time. A small tank gives a fish very little room to swim or roam, and it also must be cleaned more often as it gets messy a lot easier than a big tank. I honestly would recommend you getting a minimum 10gallon tank to start with, but a great rule of thumb is to get the biggest possible fish tank you can afford and fit in the area where you will keep your tank.

Be sure to look for a fish tank that is of standard size. If you buy an odd sized fish tank then rest assured that you are going to have a harder time finding accessories for your fish tank. Filters usually come in standard sizes, if your tank is not of standard size then good luck finding a filter that will fit. I honestly recommend one to buy all their home aquarium accessories separately. My girlfriend bought one of those 10gallon tank kits thinking she would save money. She ended up spending over $100 just to get her home aquarium started.

Here are a few pictures of some different sized fish tanks.
